Competent Communicator Project

Project Description: Each group of students (4or 5 per group) has been assigned a social issue. With your group, you will conduct research in order to:

  • Narrow down your topic until you have one specific problem on which to focus.
  • Summarize the problem and state your group’s opinion about it using at least three specific supporting examples.
  • Explain the importance of the problem globally and locally.
  • Find possible solutions to the problem.
  • Find at least one community action opportunity that relates to the problem.

Research: You will have several days to research your issue. You must find a minimum of 5 sources to use, including a primary source.  The primary source should be your survey. Your sources must come from the 4 types of resources listed below:

I. Search Engine:

Nettrekker

http://middle.nettrekker.com/subject/

We call this "Schoogle" or Google for school. This search engine includes only educationally appropriate websites.

II. Databases:

The Student Research Center allows you to search for specific information formats, including newspapers, magazines, primary sources, photos, maps, and more.

III. Ms. Mize's approved websites:

Be sure that the website you go to is appropriate for school use.   Do not try to listen to music or watch videos.   If you want a video for your assignment, you much clear it with me.

IV. Print resources from the library bookcart

NOTE: For this assignment, you may use only the resources listed above. You may not use websites you find through searching on Google, Ask, or any other free search engine, without permission.

Use notecards to collect the important information you find from the various sources. Remember, the sources you plan to use must be cited in MLA format, with the citations included in your final product. Use EasyBib to help you automatically format your citations (www.easybib.com).

Survey:

  • Create a survey to poll what 20 other students in you school know (or think they know) about your topic.
  • Use your research to create ten true/false questions. (One or two questions should reflect the perceived importance of this problem.)
  • Compile the answers and create tables or graphs to display the results.

Writing your Results:

  • You will organize your information on a storyboard before importing your information into a technology format.

Final Product:  Create a multimedia presentation, which includes

  • At least 10 PowerPoint slides.
  • Additional slides including an introductory slide, a concluding slide, a bibliography slide, and a list of who was in your group.
  • A 15 minutes oral presentation, with each group member participating.

Presentation Reminders:

  • Do not only read us the slides. You should give us a lot more information than what could fit on the slides.
  • Make sure that you are able to identify the facilitator, initiator, and agitator.  Do the roles change throughout the process? Make sure that you can discuss this at the end of your presentation.
  • Use a conversational style and look at your audience.
  • Everyone participates in the presentation.

Evaluation:

  • Each person will evaluate the group process using the criteria checklist.
  • Your project will be evaluated using the appropriate scoring rubric.

Extra credit:

  • Create a website or newsletter to educate people about your topic
